The injection molding process is a cyclic thermodynamic sequence that transforms raw, solid plastic resin into fully formed, solid components. The entire process takes anywhere from 5 seconds to 3 minutes per cycle, depending on part size and material wall thickness.
The 6 Stages of the Injection Molding Cycle
Clamping:
The injection molding machine uses a hydraulic, mechanical toggle, or all-electric clamp to lock the two halves of the steel tool (A-side and B-side) together. The system applies tons of clamping force to keep the mold tightly shut against the immense internal pressures of the incoming plastic.
Plastification (Melting):
Raw plastic pellets (nurdles) drop from a hopper into a heated barrel. Inside, a reciprocating screw rotates, moving the material forward. The combination of external heater bands and internal frictional shear heat melts the plastic into a uniform fluid as it accumulates at the front of the screw.
Injection:
The screw stops rotating and acts as a high-pressure piston, shifting forward rapidly. It rams the molten plastic through the machine nozzle, into the mold's sprue, down the runner system, and through the gates into the cold cavity of the mold tool.
Packing & Dwelling:
Once the cavity is filled, the screw continues to exert forward pressure on the material. This "packing" phase forces extra material into the mold to compensate for volumetric shrinkage that naturally occurs as the plastic cools down and contracts.
Cooling:
The plastic remains held inside the locked mold tool. Coolant (typically treated water or thermal oil) continuously circulates through machined internal cooling channels inside the mold plates to quickly sap heat away from the part. The part must remain inside until it is rigid enough to hold its shape.
Ejection:
The clamping unit pulls the B-side of the mold open along the parting line. A mechanical actuator activates built-in ejector pins or a stripper plate, pushing the solidified part out of the mold cavity into a drop bin, robotic arm, or conveyor belt. The mold slams shut, and the cycle repeats.
