Plastic mold injection is the process of manufacturing custom parts by forcing liquefied plastic under high pressure into a machined metal die.
Step-by-Step Production Cycle
Clamping: A hydraulic or electric press locks the two halves of the mold tool together with tons of clamping force.
Plastification: Raw plastic pellets (nurdles) feed from a hopper into a heated barrel, where a reciprocating screw melts them into a uniform fluid.
Injection: The screw acts as a ram, forcing the hot plastic through a nozzle and runner system into the cold mold cavity.
Packing & Dwelling: Continuous pressure is applied to pack the material tightly into the mold, compensating for internal shrinkage as the plastic cools.
Cooling: Water or oil lines running through the mold base rapidly cool the part until it solidifies (this step takes up to 70% of the total cycle time).
Ejection: The mold opens, and mechanical ejector pins push the finished component out into a bin or conveyor.
